“For me Public Art is not about working with a community but create a new community that otherwise would not exist, creating a new constituency”
– Tania Bruguera
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Tania Bruguera, a globally renowned performance artist from Cuba, held a public lecture about the relationship between Artists and Politics in Gudskul (26/11). Dozens of participants were present to listen to Tania Bruguera’s controversial experiences in the history of contemporary art, where she was often involved in carrying art projects which resulted in her being imprisoned. The public lecture titled as Political Timing Specific Art revealed how her artistic works were intertwined with the political atmosphere in which they inhabited. Some of the art projects she pioneered have encouraged people to further dismantle the function of art and political change.
For Bruguera, the most important thing is how art can be used to change a political ecosystem. Pertaining to the aesthetics of art and society, Bruguera explained that art projects should not only be used to invite people to be involved or become collaborators but also to become users in changing or improving our existing political order. This is then, the function of art in the ethics of ecosystem believed by Bruguera.
In addition to giving public lectures, Bruguera also shared her ideas and provided input amongst the youth participants of Gudskul artists and their ongoing projects. She emphasized on how the projects they initiated should not only talk about personal ideas which only reflect their own anxieties, but it should have an impact on the sustainability of the community. Bruguera also paid a visit to Monas to see the dioramas of Edhi Soenarso and visit the Jakarta Trotoart at Penjaringan, North Jakarta.
